Cruise FLL to Grand Bahama - 12.9

Starting Friday, December 8th you can once again cruise to the Bahamas. Balearia, the Spanish shipping company, will operate ferry sevice daily (except for Wednesday) and complete the journey from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama in about 2 1/2 hours with calm seas, with passenger fares starting at $49 and first class tickets selling for $90.

The ferry, a 225-foot-long, aluminum-hulled catamaran dubbed Pinar del Rio, will depart from Terminal 1 at Port Everglades at 10 a.m. and arrive in Grand Bahama at 12:30 p.m., and return at 7:30 p.m., taking the same amount of time.

The new service will replace the route run by Discovery Cruise Line for nearly 20 years before the company went out of business in October, said Phil Allen, port director.

Bahamian tourism officials present for the announcement said the service will improve travel to the islands from South Florida and contribute millions in economic impact to the local economy.

Balearia officials said they hope to add a service to Bimini in the near future.

Art Basel 2011: YogArt @ Loews Hotel

Developed by South Florida’s own Dawn B. Feinberg, a widely recognized certified yoga instructor and licensed movement therapist, YogArt at the Loews Miami Beach (1601 Collins Avenue) is an officially supported event by Art Basel Miami Beach. YogArt, which will become an annual installation, will provide participants at any level, from novice to seasoned students, with an enhanced yoga experience – a pairing of Jivamukti yoga practice with art and live music.

This unique blend of yoga, art and live music will encourage participants to open their minds to a yoga experience that allows them to express themselves both artistically and physically. The events will take place at 9 AM and 5:30 PM daily. All classes will last approximately one hour and will end with a spread of healthy refreshments to complete the nourishing experience of YogArt.

Thursday's class will feature singer and songwriter Trevor Hall; all other YogArt classes will feature live music by The Mayapuris to accompany Dawn’s teaching as she guides participants through their enhanced experience. After almost half a century in storage, the astonishing discovery of an archive of historically significant film negatives of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, taken in 1963 and 1964 by fine art photographer William John Kennedy, have fully surfaced and begun to emerge in the art world. Kennedy’s images capture the two artists and their soon-to-be iconic works at the seminal point of their careers and at the birth of the Pop Art Movement. Viewers of the only Miami-based, museum-style exhibition within SCOPE Miami will encounter a careful selection of Kennedy’s compelling photographic images—along with never-before-heard 1960s audio conversations between Warhol and artist Ultra Violet.

The Miami Rescue Mission/Broward Outreach Centers know that Thanksgiving is a time of celebration and is eager to help provide a festive atmosphere to the homeless and hungry of South Florida. All three campuses will be holding their annual block party and Great Thanksgiving Banquet to make the day special for our community. In fact, The Miami Rescue Mission/Broward Outreach Centers and over 600 volunteers will provide over 2,500 traditional Thanksgiving meals for the homeless and hungry of Miami-Dade and Broward County at The Great Thanksgiving Banquet and Outside Block Parties.

In addition to a traditional Thanksgiving meal, there will be entertainment at each location for both children and adults that will include a “kid’s corner,” live music and other fun activities. Various giveaways and services will be on each campus during the outside event and festivities. Clothes and hygiene products will be given to those families in need as well as services such as haircuts, shoulder massages and blood pressure checks.

The events will take place from 8 AM - 1PM at Miami Rescue Mission (2020 NW 1st Avenue Miami) and 9 AM - 1 PM at both Broward Outreach Centers (Hollywood: 2056 Scott Street - Hollywood & Pompano: 1700 Blount Road - Pompano Beach). Meals will be served 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM.

Since 1922 the Miami Rescue Mission (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) Centers have served the homeless and needy men, women, and children of Miami. Every day the organization provides food, shelter, clothing, education, job training, spiritual direction and long-term rehabilitation programs in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano to nearly 1,000 homeless.

Dana A Dorsey: Miami's first Black Millionaire - 11.16

Dana A Dorsey was born in 1872 in Georgia. The first child in his family not born into slavery, he received only a 4th grade education but went on to be a banker, businessman and eventually philanthropist and is known as Miami's first Black millionaire.

Moving to Miami just before the turn of the century to work on the Flagler Railroad, Dorsey bought and developed land, quickly learning the art of flipping properties. As his money grew, he kept investing. He was truly a founding father of Black Miami, creating the first Black establishments in Miami including the Dorsey Hotel and the Negro Savings Bank. In fact, he sold Mr. Collins part of the land which is now the famous, Fisher Island.

The Wolfsonian Visionaries will host 11:11:11, the second annual Visionaries’ fundraiser to benefit The Wolfsonian–Florida International University. The evening, which also marks The Wolfsonian’s 16th anniversary, will feature signature dishes from Miami’s top restaurants and caterers, as well as top shelf spirits from Bacardi. DJ Mauricio Parra will curate the music, and the images of artist Emilio Chapela will be on display in a site-specific installation. The evening will also include a surprise interactive event to mark 11:11PM.

The Wolfsonian opened its doors on Washington Avenue on November 11, 1995, and the Visionaries have embraced this special date as the theme for their yearly fundraiser. “November 11, 2011 is a very special, transcendent moment of good will, and we’ve designed the 11:11:11 party with an emphasis on a feeling of euphoria, on celebrating a celestial moment,” says Jose Zaldivar, a member of the Visionaries host committee. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. We’re celebrating the moment, the here and now, and making this party a true celebration of life.”

The event will take place on the seventh floor of 1111 Lincoln Road, which offers panoramic views of Miami Beach. The mixed-use concrete and glass parking facility, developed by Robert Wennett, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, and opened in 2009, has become somewhat of a surprise event destination. Architect Jacques Herzog describes the structure as “all muscle without cloth,” in keeping with the Miami Beach aesthetic. Wennett, an emeritus member of The Wolfsonian’s Advisory Board, has generously donated the space for the event.

Zaldivar has designed the space to feel heavenly, “like a cloud of light.” It will be illuminated by images from a book on the theme of 11:11:11 by the artist Emilio Chapela, commissioned by Wennett for the event. Finally, at 11:11 p.m., guests will enjoy a surprise performance art piece. The evening features an impressive selection of tasting tables representing a dozen restaurants and caterers donating their services, including Le Basque, Lovely Daze Desserts, Lyon + Lyon, Meat Market, Petit Pois Events & Catering, Ortanique, Rosa Mexicano, Shake Shack, Stella’s Sweet Shoppe, and Thierry’s Catering. Each will serve a signature dish. “They are really going to wow people with the food,” says Zaldivar. Tonight in honor of Hampton's Birthday at SoundScape you can check out Baz Luhrmann's 2001, Academy Award winning romantic jukebox musical film, Moulin Rouge.

Based on the Orphean myth, La Traviata and la Boheme and filmed in Sydney, Australia, Moulin Rouge was the first musical nominated for Best Picture in 22 years. The film stars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman as Christian and Satine; John Leguizamo and Kylie Minogue have cameos as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the Green Fairy respectively.

Interestingly enough, the idea for this film was developed between Luhrmann and his wife (Catherine Martin, Production Designer), after seeing a Bollywood film while on location in India"Spectacular, Spectacular" the play within the film itself, may have been based on the ancient Sanskrit play, "The Little Clay Cart".

The idea, was to give 2001 audiences the same WOW factor moments that the audiences in 1899 had by updating the music and making it relevant to Gen-X audiences. The $52.5 million budget certainly paid off - - the film grossed over $14 million in the first weekend and almost $180 million worldwide, breaking box office records in Australia.

The Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival celebrates its Tenth Anniversary this Sunday, November 13th from 10 AM - 10 PM at Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida (about a half hour North of the Beach). Promising "Ten times the Fun and Ten times the Excitement" this one-day festival hosts thousands annually and is the biggest Caribbean food festival in the United States.

The 2011 Veterans Day Parade will be held on Veterans Day, November 11th starting at 9 AM. Participants will line up along Washington Avenue on 17th Street. Marchers will then travel south on Washington Avenue and then west on 11th Street into Flamingo Park. Commissioner Libbin will speak along with other presenters to commence the wreath laying ceremony and 21-gun salute at Flamingo Park at 10:30 AM followed by a moment of silence at 11 AM in honor of our First World War Armistice Day Tradition.

Miami Beach Commissioner Jerry Libbin is continuing in his commitment to organize local support for our troops during the Veterans Day Parade in Miami Beach. Since his involvement with the Veterans Day Parade in 2009, Commissioner Libbin has consecutively set record participation numbers by encouraging schools, organizations and businesses to join in the annual celebration and ceremony honoring veterans. The 2011 Veterans Day Parade is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3559. Applications for group participation may be requested.

Sleepless Night 11: Yoko Ono's Wish Tree @ Betsy - 6 PM

The Betsy Hotel (1440 Ocean Drive), a hub for arts and culture on South Beach, will take part in Sleepless Night, Miami Beach’s all night arts festival with a series of events that exemplify the hotel and its leadershipteam’s firmly established commitment to philanthropy, art, music and literature.

Beginning at 6 PM, in cooperation with The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a state of the art mobile recording studio and video production facility, The Betsy Hotel will host a dedication ceremony for a tree that it has donated to the City of Miami Beach in honor of Yoko Ono’s interactive artwork, Wish Tree. Located in Lummus Park, directly across the street from the hotel at 1440 Ocean Drive; the community is invited to attend the dedication and plaque installation. The Wish Tree has been integral to many of Ono’s exhibitions around the world in museums and cultural centers where people have been invited to write their personal wishes for peace and tie them to a tree branch.

The first 100 guests to add their wishes to the tree will have their photograph taken by one of several professional photographers (including Robert Zuckerman) and exhibited on board the Lennon Bus.

From 6-11 PM, people are invited to participate in creating their own wish and tying it to the tree.
The Lennon Bus, parked in front of The Betsy, will be open for interactive tours and offers the public the opportunity to see the world’s only sanctioned replica of The Imagine Peace Tower. Located in Iceland, the Peace Tower is the repository for the thousands of wishes that have been made all around the world throughout the Wish Tree project’s 30-year history.

The Betsy will also offer an open house to showcase the photographs of celebrity photographer Robert Zuckerman. The artist, renowned in the motion picture industry for his stirring portraits, will be in attendance. A free poster by the artist will be handed out to the first 100 visitors.

Last, but certainly not least, from 9-11 PM, YoungArts award-winning Singer, Kate Davis, a will perform in the Betsy Hotel’s salon.

The Hindu Temple is architecturally significant because it is one of the most unique houses in Miami. Designed in 1920 by August Geiger, a prominent local architect, the building was inspired by the set of a movie filmed on the site, and its design mixes classical and Middle Eastern influences. The Hindu Temple is distinguished by its main facade fronting on the Seybold Canal, with its two domed octagonal towers and finely detailed windows. The building is also significant for its association with two of Miami's pioneer families.

Museum Mondays: Mad Hatter Arts Festival - 10.28

The Mad Hatter Arts Festival returns for its 7th season taking place at The Barnacle and along the sidewalks of Main Highway, from the Cloisters to Calamari. This juried event features artists of all types of media.

Chalk It Up! street painting makes its Miami debut. Street painting dates to 16th century Italy where artists travelled from town to town, religious festival to religious festival, transforming streets in to temporary art galleries. This truly ephemeral art form is experiencing a 21st century renaissance. Chalk It Up! takes place in the parking lot at Grand Avenue and Fuller Street. The inaugural theme is Through the Looking Glass.

Additionally, Watch Art Happen will be ongoing throughout the weekend. Artists are invited to participate in this new element of the Festival, joining fellow artists painting en plein air on the streets of the historic village of Coconut Grove. Designated areas will be located around the Grove.

As always, music is a highlight of the Mad Hatter, plus there is a participatory drum circle, various hat contests to enter, and activities for kids of all ages. Food will be available for purchase from The Barnacle Society's concession stand or grab a map and venture out on Beyond the Looking Glass Grove Adventure for drinks and treats at participating restaurants and eateries. Return with a picnic to The Barnacle on Saturday evening when the gates open at 7pm for a 60th anniversary showing of the classic, Alice in Wonderland. Movie begins at 8pm with no entry after 8:15. Movie tickets are $5 per person for ages 6 and over; $3 for ages 2-5; and free for ages under 2.

For a sneak peak at the tent artists’ work, The Barnacle Society has arranged a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as the opening reception on Friday, October 28 from 6-9pm on the front lawn of The Barnacle. This quirky lawn party celebrates the opening of the Mad Hatter Arts Festival. Guests are advised to bring their own teacup and follow the white rabbit through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole to The Barnacle at 3485 Main Highway to a Wonderland where Tea Party Fare will be served and there will be a cash bar. Wonderland-themed costumes are encouraged. Reservations are required with a fee of $20 per person for members of The Barnacle Society; $25 per person for non-members; and $30 for all after the Rsvp deadline of October 21. Reservations can be made online. Proceeds from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will be used for the care and maintenance of The Barnacle.

David Dunn, Rene Barge and Gustavo Matamoros return to Sleepless Night with another extended duration, site-specific performance; their piece "Canal" was the unqualified hit of Sleepless Night 2009.

Frozen Music is an artist research collective and experimental music ensemble that designs and realizes interdisciplinary music in response to the acoustical characteristics of a given site. It focuses upon the making of otherwise inaudible phenomena audible in science, nature and architecture. Each performance is a kind of acoustical "tuning" or redrawing of the existing aural landscape through direct sound generation and amplification.

Sleepless Night 11: Park @420

Park@420 is a new innovative Enrique Norten-designed parking garage and retail center that will be open to the public in time for Lincoln Road’s wildly popular Halloween weekend and has been named as the “Official Garage” of Sleepless Night on November 5th in Miami Beach. The garage is offering a special Sleepless Night flat fee of $10 from 6 PM - 6 AM. Situated behind 420 Lincoln Road, the original 1940s-era building at the southwest corner of Washington Avenue and Lincoln Road, Park@420 is literally at the center of the city’s vibrant artistic, cultural and retail renaissance.

The five-story, $40 million contemporary complex contains the 500-space parking garage with an entrance conveniently located on 16th Street and Drexel Avenue, and Shoppes@420, which boasts 17,400 square feet of available retail and restaurant space. Miami-based Arellano Construction is responsible for construction management of the project.

Lincoln Road is now anchored on both east and west by mixed-use garage structures designed by two of the world’s top architectural firms: Norten’s TEN Arquitectos, based in Mexico and New York, and Herzog & de Meuron of Switzerland, which designed the garage at the corner of Alton Road.
“We conceptualized all aspects of the new building before construction began,” said Lamys Guerrero, vice president of 420 Lincoln Road Associates, who is overseeing the construction of the building. “Our team captured the boldness of Norten’s design and managed the project through its two years of development and construction, working in close collaboration with the architect, the community and the city to achieve an iconic masterpiece that will make a lasting contribution to the urban fabric of Miami Beach.”

The still evolving city-wide block, anchored by the original 1940s building, is ideally centered in the heart of South Beach, just blocks from the beach, convention center, City Hall, cultural arts venues, and hotels. A 20,000 square-foot, 1,600-seat former movie theater, located adjacent to the new addition, is in the process of being transformed into a multi-level retail space with an anticipated opening of December 2012.
