Fabulous First Friday Laser Shows - 9.2

Fabulous First Friday at the Miami Science Museum is an amazing adventure for kids and adults alike with an evening of programming perfectly suited to meet most any family's needs.  Join in the fun tonight.

First, at 7:30 PM there is a free planetarium show during which guests can "reach for the stars," followed by a free Rooftop Observatory Viewing which goes until 10 PM.  The Activity Room will also be open featuring supervised activities and demonstrations for kids ages three and older starting at 8 PM.

In addition, there are laser shows every hour beginning with a family "Pop" show at 8 PM.  Then the Best of the Beatles at 9 PM, Pink Floyd: Echoes is next at 10 PM, then Bob Marley at 11 PM and Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon finishing off the evening at midnight. Laser show admission is $4 per child and $8 per adult.

Normal Museum hours are 10 AM to 6 PM and current exhibitions include Earth From Space: The Magic Planet, Energy Tracker, Heart Smart, The Sea Lab, and Wildlife Center.  All exhibitions are included in the admission price, $14.95 for adults and $10.95 for kids 3-12 and seniors 65+. Parking is Free.

For those of you who wish to always be near a Food Truck, the Ms. Cheezious food truck will be on site, and donate 10 percent of all sales to Miami Science Museum’s Upward Bound program. One of the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO programs, Upward Bound helps low income, first-generation college bound students to be prepared for postsecondary study, and to graduate college with a bachelor’s degree in science, math, and technology related fields.

The Great Grove Bed Race - 9.4

The third annual celebration of bed racing will take place this fall, Labor Day Weekend, Sunday September 4th from 11 AM to 5 PM at Commodore and Main in the Grove.

The Great Grove Bed Race is a free community event and fundraiser in Coconut Grove, Florida, each year the race is attended by celebrities and proves that a community can come together, have fun, be unique and raise funds for charity.

The six-hour event is scheduled to take place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public. The wildly comedic bed race involves rolling beds down village streets in Coconut Grove with the local South Florida community, individuals, businesses, organizations, and clubs sponsoring the beds.

Teams consist of 5 members, four (4) races and one (1) rider, racing against the clock until the fastest beds in each division are determined. Divisions are Men’s, Women’s, Co-Ed and Corporate/Over 30. Those finalists go head-to-head in a race for the top position. More important than the speed trophies are the top prizes are awarded for theme, engineering, décor, best overall and crowd favorite through our TEXT your vote telecom sponsor.

Open to the public, the race is organized as a fun community event to improve awareness and economic impact to the Grove Village and raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. 100% of the registration fee goes to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

Prizes: Prizes will be announced at Bed Race for the various categories (Top Online Fundraiser – Best Engineered Bed – Crowd Favorite (by text votes) – Most Creative Bed – Best Theme – Best Pit Performance – Top Virgin Entry) Cash and gift certificates go to these categories only. Trophies are awarded for the actual race for First, Second and Third Place finishing.

Many activities will take place during the day along with the Bed Race; there is a Parade of Beds, Theme contest (best costumes and cheers would help in winning this), decoration contest, etc.

Finnegan’s River Announces: Finnegan’s Music Festival

FMF promises to fill Labor Day Weekend with three days of music by some of Miami’s favorite local acts. The festival will run all weekend, kicking off in the afternoon with a pool party each day, and running into the wee hours. FMF will take place beginning at 4p.m. on Friday September 2nd, and 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 3rd and Sunday, September 4th, with each day jam-packed with music including six to eight live acts per day plus DJ sets by resident DJ Jammin Jorge and special guests in between performers.

The lineup promises to be a prime representation of Miami’s live music scene, as diverse as it is filled with fan favorites.  Just a few of the acts already booked for the festival include ArtOfficial, PALO!, Jahfe, Elastic Bond, Ketchy Shuby, Suenalo and ¡MAYDAY!

15th Annual Brazilian Film Festival - 8.19 -27

Inffinito Foundation of Miami, the premier independent promoter of Brazilian cinema and cultural arts around the world presents the official lineup of features, documentaries and short films scheduled to commemorate the 15th annual edition of the Brazilian Film Festival of Miami, the largest annual showcase of independent Portuguese-language films from Brazil presented in the United States.

Premieres and screenings of 25 award-winning features and documentaries and 15 shorts will be held August 19-27. Entries will be eligible to compete for the Festival's Crystal Lens Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay, among other juried categories. The Festival is the only exhibition in the U.S. that receives perennial support from Brazil's top public and private film production and promotion financiers, including oil giant PETROBRAS, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture's Audiovisual Secretariat and ANCINE (Agência Nacional do Cinema).

"To turn 15, it has a very special meaning in Brazil," explains Brazilian Film Festival co-founder Viviane Spinelli. "During that time, the Festival has come of age, just like the Brazilian film industry is coming of age, and our films, our directors and our stars are being embraced by audiences around the world."

During the past 15 years, the biggest names in Brazilian cinema have attended the Festival, including director Fernando Meirelles (City of God), actor Rodrigo Santoro (300, Carandiru) actor Selton Mello (To the Left of the Father, My Name Isn't Johnny), actress Andrea Beltrão (Time of Fear), actress Glória Pires (Lula, the Son of Brazil), actor José Wilker (Elvis & Madona), actress Lília Cabral (In Therapy) and directors Bruno Barreto (Four Days in September) and Fabio Barreto (Lula, Son of Brazil).

The 2011 Festival will feature performances and films by actor Wagner Moura, director/producer Fernando Meirelles and director Toniko Melo (VIPs); world-renowned singer/musician Caetano Veloso (A Night in '67) and samba queen Elza Soares (Elza); actor-screenwriter Bruno Mazzeo (Trap.com, Take It Easy); actors Marco Nanini and Maria Luisa Mendonça (The Supreme Happiness); actress Cleo Pires (Any Stray Cat); and actor Marcelo Serrado (Malu on Bicycle), among many others.

In the space where plates used to fly you will soon be able to order that wonderful Chicken Satay that Philippe is so well known for.  As per eater.com the high-end Chinese eatery is moving to the Collins Avenue location in hopes of catching some of the Prime conglomerates overflow.

In its place, we welcome LA's celebrity hotspot Koi which will nicely balance with STK on the northern end of the Gansevoort.

Miguel Parades Gallery Show - 8.13

Tonight, Miami-based pop and multi-media artist, sculptor and urban realist, Miguel Paredes, will open the doors of his popular gallery during the district’s 2nd Saturdays Art Walk.

The artist will be celebrating summer with nearly double the amount of art work and new products. Paredes has transformed his gallery once again, filling the walls with new work as well as unseen early works. Eight new metal pieces will be exhibited in addition to early work from his Train, Culture in a Bag and Salseros Series. His Fine Art Store will feature brand new products including journals, mugs, tables, wood panels and pillows.

Guests this Saturday will enjoy Spanish tapas by Tapas y Tintos, Midown from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In addition, complimentary Bombay Sapphire® signature cocktails will be available along with beers from the Heineken Light art bar, a selection of Rex Goliath wines and sparkling water courtesy of Perrier. Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and Pink Floyd Laser Light Shows @ MiaSci - Friday 8.5

Fabulous First Friday at the Miami Science Museum is an amazing adventure for kids and adults alike with an evening of programming perfectly suited to meet most any family's needs.  Join in the fun tonight ... and mark your calendar for next month's event on Friday, September 2nd.

First, at 7:30 PM there is a free planetarium show during which guests can "reach for the stars," followed by a free Rooftop Observatory Viewing which goes until 10 PM.  The Activity Room will also be open featuring supervised activities and demonstrations for kids ages three and older starting at 8 PM.

In addition, there are laser shows every hour beginning with a family "Pop" show at 8 PM.  Pink Floyd is next at 9 PM, then Led Zeppelin at 10 PM, Bob Marley at 11 PM and Radiohead finishing off the evening at midnight. Laser show admission is $4 per child and $8 per adult.

Normal Museum hours are 10 AM to 6 PM and current exhibitions include Earth From Space: The Magic Planet, Energy Tracker, Heart Smart, The Sea Lab, and Wildlife Center.  All exhibitions are included in the admission price, $14.95 for adults and $10.95 for kids 3-12 and seniors 65+. Parking is Free.
