Eden Roc Hotel by Lapidus

Miami Beach is the largest example of Art Deco architecture on the planet, but do you know about MiMo?  Miami Modern architecture was Miami's answer to the post-war modern architectural efforts.  Some of the best known examples are the Eden Roc and the Fontainebleu by Lapidus.

The main district is in North Miami Beach with additional examples such as the Bacardi Building being found in "MiMo on BiBo" [Biscayne Boulevard].  For more information on MiMo, check out the book, MiMo: Miami Modern Revealed by Eric P. Nash and Randall C. Robinson Jr.

The tour, which costs $20 will take place this Saturday (and the first Saturday of each month) from 10:30 AM to Noon at the North Beach Bandshell at 73rd and Collins.

Straight Up Thursdays ... don't ask for a chaser.

Calling all House Heads!


This Thursday begins the first of what's slated to be the hottest true house weekly on the beach... Straight Up Thursdays at Florida Room.

Just think back (or forward) to WMC. My favorite night is always Felix at Florida Room.  The usually unannounced performance, always super late, nice and dark, intimate. Every genre shines in this perfect venue, but a true house night, a fabulous treat.


Hosts Lori Warriner, Tassia, Mike Whalen and Steven Hernandez will no doubt bring a stellar crowd.  Underground house beats by JP Rigaud and Marc Sacheli will keep the vibe fresh; weekly guest DJs or live musicians will add a little spice. 

Some of Miami's top mixologists stand behind the garden-covered bar, creating aromatic Florida Room specialties like the "Beach Bison."  Mojitos can be ordered in a variety of flavors all of which are muddled with fresh fruit.  As a special treat, there will be bar specials for locals. Table service is available. 


This event has no cover, but the door will be tight, no doubt.

Le Chat Noir Hollywood Soiree - 2 October

This Saturday, 2 October at 7 PM in celebration of the timeless glamour of the black cat, The Cat Network presents "Le Chat Noir" a dual soiree and fundraiser.

The theme of the evening is Old-Hollywood in black and silver and in true Hollywood style, guests will be treated to an open bar courtesy of Bacardi USA and Hors d’oeuvres by Smith & Wollensky. There will also be a silent auction and fashion show by DEVA swimwear. Tickets are $50 each in advance, $75 at the door.

 

All proceeds benefiting The Cat Network, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless cats. This is the inaugural fundraiser event for The Cat Network, whose mission is to reduce the overpopulation of cats in Miami. Le Chat Noir event is designed to educate the public about the plight of homeless cats in South Florida, specifically the black cat who has suffered an unlucky reputation.

Art Basel 2010: Oceanfront Nights

Less than 90 days until BASEL... are you ready?

A new Art Basel press release came out today detailing the highlights of the upcoming 2010 show and the Oceanfront exhibition are which launched last year is back! The area, designed by young architects Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem will house the Oceanfront Nights program which features four cities "at the forefront o today's artistic experiementation and cross-disciplinary collaboration: Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow and Mexico City." Each will be represented for an evening with video, music, performance and art.

Creative Time, the company creating the event is partnering with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, Tramway in Glasgow and 032c in Berlin to ensure authenticity.

Looks like this one is not to be missed at all so mark your calendars now.

Blue Door at Delano is part of the Chadrow group with Chef Claude Troisgros. In the amazing setting of the Delano designed by Starke. Cuisine is French with Brazilian overtones. Go on a Tuesday and take part in the normal Rose Bar festivities, then you can go downstairs to Florida Room. Dinner except Friday and Saturday. Lunch except weekends.

Essensia at the Palms is natural, fresh, tasty gourmet using local and seasonal vegetables and meats. Inside and outside seating in a calming setting. Lunch except Sunday and Dinner every night. 

Kaspia is direct from Paris and housed in The Webster hotel.  This amazing Russian cuisine will keep you fueled for the 2 levels of fashion above.  Try the Linguini with Smoked Salmon. Spice served lunch and dinner all week.  

Michy's is what Michelle Bernstien calls "luxurious comfort food" it is French with both Spanish and Italian influences. Dinner except Monday and Saturday.

Four Chefs For Success For Kids

Get ready for greatness... De Rodriguez Ocean will be open for a sneak preview on September 15th for a dinner to benefit Success for Kids, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, rallying to help to empower at-risk children and adolescents to become resilient, productive citizens with the hopes of reducing what has become an epidemic of cruel behavior among today’s youth. On this special night, you will be treated to signature dishes from not just Douglas Rodriguez but Talula's Che Andrea Curto-Randazzo, Timo's Che Tim Andriola and Sugarcane's Chef Timon Balloo.

De Rodriguez Ocean will focus on seafood and will offer 15 varieties of civiche, a raw bar and sustainable fish and shellfish options. Can you say YUM!
